Vacancy walk

A city walk to five selected vacant premises in Ottakring, where each one was claimed in a performance right in front of it.

Place
Ottakringer Strasse 29, Kirchstetterngasse 60, Gaullachergasse 55, Friedmanngasse 68, Grundsteingasse 67, 1160 Vienna
Period
2015
Use
Gallery, reading, language school, knitting salon, laundrette
Scale
SMALL — Temporary use of street-front premises

Contributors: 11 people, among them the artist Heinz Seidenbusch.

Faced with the many vacant units on one side and the unmet spatial wishes of people on low incomes on the other, a city walk combined with performances seemed the right way to draw public attention to this grievance in urban space. Five people or groups performed the idea they would bring to “their” premises. Because ideas need space. Affordable space.
